Introduction to the Dizzy Patient in the Acute Setting
Course Aim
This is a foundation level course aiming to develop clinicians' confidence and competence in managing dizziness in the acute setting. Through spaced learning across four sessions you will gain foundational knowledge, practical skills, and sound clinical reasoning for safe, timely decision-making in acute presentations.
Please note this is NOT a Vestibular Rehabilitation Course. The focus of this course is the decision making and management in the acute presentation.
Learning Outcomes
At the end of the course, and in relation to the complex and severe ABI cohort, participants will be able to:
- Identify and treat the person with uncomplicated BPPV of the posterior and horizontal canals
- Identify those with likely Vestibular Neuritis, providing initial Physiotherapy management
- Screen for red flags that would suggest a central disorder
- Demonstrate knowledge to advocate for your patient’s ongoing management

Through spaced learning across 3 required sessions, and one optional session, this course covers the following knowledge and skills:
Who should attend?
- Registered with AHPRA as a Physiotherapist
- This course would be applicable from the complete beginner through to those with some experience who wish to build on their knowledge and skills.
- It is appropriate for those working in areas such as the Emergency Department, an Acute General Medicine Unit, a Neurosciences or Trauma Unit, including new graduates and grade 1s. This course would also provide valuable skills for physiotherapists working in a generalist role.
- No previous skills or knowledge are required, however it will be expected that the provided pre-reading and preparation is completed for each session.
Record of completion
- Participants will receive a certificate of completion following the face-to-face day
